Headaches

Headaches and migraines are one of the most common reasons some will see a health practitioner. There are many different conditions that result in pain in the head, however most commonly in our clinic our physiotherapists see:

  • Cervicogenic headache

  • Tension headaches

  • Migraine

  • Cervicogenic dizziness 

  • Trigeminal Neuralgia 
     

Physiotherapy is a safe and effective way to help manage a variety of headache conditions.  Particularly those that arising from the muscle and joints around the neck and jaw. 

Headaches and migraine can present in a variety of different ways, even if they are often coming the muscle of the neck and jaw. Patients often complain of pain in a variety of areas – from the back of their head, behind the eyes or over one side of their face. They can also be associated with a number of other related symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or light sensitivity. Our physiotherapists can help you better understand the cause of your symptoms and triggers.    

An initial appointment with our physiotherapist is regards to your headache or migraine starts with a thorough history of your condition. This is to ensure that physiotherapy is the most appropriate place for you. Treatment then usually involves some hands on therapy at the neck, advice around pain management strategies and a progressive exercise program that is individual to you. 


For patients who are older than 50 and have a new onset of headache/migraine or have a different than usual presentation we recommend seeing your GP as the first point of call.
